The Brody Complex is undergoing dynamic renovations that will create an exciting new environment, complete with inviting community spaces and new dining features for our Spartans to enjoy. The renovation will transform the existing space into a one-of-a-kind residential experience that celebrates student life, and embodies MSU’s commitment to accessibility and sustainability. The initial phase began in January of 2009 with Brody Hall.
Brody Dining Services will still provide full menu options to residents. Due to the complex nature of this renovation project, Brody Dining Services will be housed in the first floor of the north side of Brody Hall from fall 2009 through spring 2010. The new dining facilities are scheduled to open in fall 2010. The renovations for Sparty's at Brody Complex will include a retail sales space along with a coffee shop atmosphere. As Brody Complex is renovated, Sparty's will also be included in those changes. Emmons Hall will be the first residence hall in the Brody Complex to undergo renovations, which will begin in May 2010. Among other upgrades, planned improvements include redesigned entrances, a two-story main lounge and improved community spaces on all floors. Similar renovations are planned for Bailey Hall, where construction is slated to begin in May 2011. For more details, please download the brochure "The Future of Brody." (PDF) |

| November 18 | ![]() Crew members completed laying brick on the back dock addition, but work on the front addition’s steel frame continues. Window walls are being installed on the south side of the building where crew members are also working on dismantling a section of concrete roof to make way for the outdoor “greenery” area on the second floor. Small plants, trees and grass will be planted in this space closer to the project’s completion. ![]() |

| November 11 | ![]() More steel has been installed to the front of the Brody building, revealing the structure’s new façade. A layer of steel is being placed on the first level of the new structure to serve as its concrete form. After concrete is poured into the form, flooring for Brody Squared dining hall entrance will be laid. The roof will also receive a layer of steel forms and once the concrete is dry, roofing material will be installed on top of the concrete layer. The window walls on the north end of the building are complete. ![]() |

| November 4 | ![]() Much progress can be seen on Brody Hall from Harrison Ave. On-lookers can now see the shape of Brody’s new addition. In the back dock area, the crew began to lay bricks on the new addition to match the rest of the building. Inside, the crew continues to build the walls for future offices and special dining areas. The crew also began building some food venue stations. The pizza and burger station is no longer a sketch on the ground. Crew members followed the station’s chalk lines, drawn weeks prior on the floor to mark specific venue locations, to build the steel wall frame that will enclose the station’s kitchen. ![]() |

| October 21 | ![]() Much progress has been made on the Brody Complex. The back dock addition is now fully enclosed and is ready to be layered with brick. In the front, a steel frame has been constructed, which outlines the building’s sloping roofline and the main components of the grotto. Concrete has been poured for the main stairwell entrance into the dining hall. On the second floor, crew members are using a coring machine to make holes in the concrete floor for drains and other necessary pipes for the dining hall’s new food venues. Wall frames for specialty rooms and for business offices can be seen on the second floor. On the roof, workers are adding several exhaust fans; one fan is needed for each food station requiring a hood vent. ![]() |
| October 7 | ![]() In the front of the Brody building, workers are making sure the foundation is level. The concrete that will be poured on top of the concrete footings must be completely flush to assure building support. Other crew members are removing the form work, a system of support for freshly poured concrete. The steam tunnel is complete and awaits backfill. Inside, brackets to carry electrical work through out the second floor sit in crates on the ground. Crew members will start installing these brackets as soon as possible. Meanwhile, the concrete floor continues to be smoothed over and topped with fresh layers of concrete to ensure it is level. ![]() |
| September 30 | ![]() The crew constructed the steel frame for the back dock’s addition. Each steel piece was strategically placed to form the structure of the new maintenance room. The galvanized steel beams were placed at the top of the structure and will eventually support the chillers, each weighting at least 15 tons. In the back, the crew is waiting to pour the concrete footings for the grotto. Inside, steel templates now take the place of chalk marks to help the crew visualize Brody Square's new floor plan. Since each food station in the new Brody cafeteria will need a hood vent, the crew will continue stretching the new vent system across the second floor ceiling. This installation is almost halfway complete. ![]() |
| September 23 | ![]() Crew members are working hard to unload the heavy steel that will frame the walls of the back dock’s addition. Each steel piece is marked with white chalk to signal exactly where it belongs in the frame. The lighter colored steel pieces have been galvanized and will be placed on the addition’s roof to mount the chillers for the new air conditioning system. In the front of the building, the steam tunnel is almost complete and the concrete is almost ready to be poured into the grotto’s wooden frame. On the second floor, the crew used chalk to draw a life-size floor plan of where future counters and work-stations will stand in the new Brody cafeteria. Plans to start building a fifth penthouse on the building’s roof are underway. ![]() |
| September 11 | ![]() Not too much has changed at the Brody construction site. Inside, crew members continue to re-route ceiling duct work and level-off the last few sections of concrete flooring. Outside, the crew continues working on the base layers of the new front entrance. ![]() |
| September 4 | ![]() Things are moving along outside at the Brody construction site. Near the back dock, steel frames are being added to the first-floor addition’s foundation. The exterior of the new utility room will soon take shape visibly. All entry ways have been stripped of their awnings and concrete porches. In the front of the building, crew members are still working on routing electrical wires out of the building through the duct bank and wooden beams now hold the shape of the soon-to-be grotto. Inside, the second floor is almost completely level. Crew members are smoothing concrete over gaps left in the flooring when the old walls were removed. More duct work has been installed on the second-floor ceiling, but much more is still needed for the future Brody Squared dining hall. ![]() |
| August 26 | ![]() The foundation for the first-floor addition near the back dock is set. This addition will eventually house maintenance equipment and will provide additional storage space. In the front of the building, the crew began backfilling the concrete foundation walls. The backfill dirt will create pressure on the walls, providing extra support for the concrete slabs. The contractors dug a duct bank in order to route electrical conduits and conductors out of the building. The electrical wires running through the conduits need to be a safe distance below the earth’s surface in order to avoid the weight of the building’s new addition. On the second floor, demolition is complete and the crew began rerouting the ceiling duct work. Crew members are re-roofing sections of the second-floor balcony, which will eventually become a solar terrace. ![]() |
| August 19 | ![]() Progress is visible on Brody’s exterior. Concrete was poured into the front addition’s foundation. Metal grates and concrete were the only materials used to construct the foundation. Pipes and gas lines have been lowered into the building’s basement, and crew members are working in a five-foot crawl space to assemble the pieces. Old awnings were removed from outdoor entrances, and will eventually be replaced. On the second floor of the building, the last of the one-paned windows have been removed, making the temporary wall the only structure separating the exterior from the interior. Inside, the incinerator has been removed from the first floor and a floor-to-ceiling oven is carefully being removed from the old kitchen upstairs. Crew members were using machines to level out the concrete floor in order to prepare the floor for a new, even layer of concrete. ![]() |
| August 12 | ![]() The second floor of the Brody Complex is almost entirely stripped of its old materials. All that remains to be removed are the one-paned windows and a few feet of steel frame left from the old serving tray conveyor belt. Temporary walls will shield the interior while the old windows are removed and replaced with stronger two-paned windows to better insulate the space. Since the buildings elevators are out of commission, a second floor receiving dock will help get construction equipment and materials up to the second floor. Outside, pipes are being lowered into the building’s basement through a cut out in the concrete wall. These pipes will remove any waste and rain water accumulation. The concrete bearings are now ready to be poured for the front addition. ![]() |
| August 4 | ![]() The transitional first floor dining hall and kitchen are complete. Carpet has been laid and tables have been set up in the dining area, and all appliances and buffet counters have been installed. Nothing more will be done to this space before the students move in. Most of the demolition is finished on the second floor. Crew members are concentrating on removing the old serving tray conveyor belt’s steel frame to complete the second floor demolition. In the front of the building, the steel foundation has been set and is almost ready for the concrete to be poured. ![]() |

| July 22 | ![]() The new steam pipes are now connected to Bryan Hall, and crews are working on getting them connected to Armstrong Hall as well. All of the recycling bins that were located near the back dock have been moved to the south side of the building in preparation for the health and fire inspections that will take place next week. Earlier this week, the electrical and plumbing inspections took place, and the hall was given partial approval for both. Outside near the back dock, crews are preparing to remove the addition that once housed Puffin’s Pastries. In front of the building, crews are in the process of digging a large hole that will serve as the foundation or the grotto. Inside, the transitional kitchen and dining room are nearly complete. The old telecommunications room that was located in the middle of the dining room has now been removed, as AT&T has completed the necessary procedures to make the new telecommunications room operational. Upstairs and throughout the rest of the first floor, crews are continuing with demolition, hoping to finish the majority of the noisy work before students return for the school year. ![]() |
| July 17 | ![]() Crews are putting the finishing touches on the transitional kitchen and dining room in preparation for inspections by the Health Department and Fire Marshall which are scheduled for the end of July. The new exhaust valve for the hood in the kitchen is being installed, and serving equipment has begun to arrive. Doors are being installed on the dining offices just outside the transitional dining room. Upstairs, demolition continues and the space that was once contained a kitchen and several dining rooms is becoming very open. Outside, crews are finishing up work with the steam vault and are currently working on routing the steam pipes to the surrounding residence halls. ![]() |
| July 10 | ![]() Lots of demolition is happening throughout the Brody Building, especially in the former kitchens upstairs and the areas downstairs not occupied by the transitional kitchen and dining room. Crews are tearing down walls, removing walk-in coolers, plumbing and duct work and working on removing the old mechanical systems in the building to make way for upgraded systems. In the transitional kitchen, workers are using pieces from the previous kitchen to piece together a new pot and pan dishwashing station. Electricians are working on preparing the new fiber optic communications room for the switchover from the old room. Outside, the laydown area has been completed, and there is now a large area covered in blacktop on the south side of the building. On the east side of the building, along the driveway to the back dock, crews are replacing the sidewalks and curbs that were removed for the water and steam system upgrades. ![]() |

| June 19 | ![]() In the transitional kitchen, crews have hung ceiling tracking and are beginning to install ceiling tiles around the periphery. The walls of the hallway outside the kitchen are complete, and crews are getting ready to paint them. The heaters that will serve the transitional kitchen and dining room have been installed on the outside of the building. The circuit breakers and fuse boxes for the kitchen have also been installed. Next to the old Sparty’s store, crews are working on a new communication room. Brody will be the first building on campus to be served by a communications room that combines both the fiber communications for internet and the communications for the phone lines. Upstairs, the windows along the wall that faces Harrison Road have been completely removed, temporarily creating an open-air space. Workers are currently installing tracking from which drywall can be hung to create transitional walls that will keep out the elements during construction. In the other dining room, demolition has begun. Outside, crews have poured concrete to form walls around the steam vault which will serve the main Brody building as well as the residence halls in the complex. On the north side of the building, the trailer containing the bathrooms for the transitional kitchen and dining has been put in place. ![]() |
| June 12 | ![]() Outside, a steam vault is being installed underground behind the main Brody Building. Inside, fiberglass reinforced walls, which are easier to clean than drywall, have been installed in the transitional kitchen. Along the south side of the building, walls have been erected to form offices for the dietary staff. Crews have just begun installing wiring for a stand-alone fire suppression system for the transitional kitchen and dining room. Upstairs, the final asbestos abatement is being completed in the old bakery area. In one of the dining rooms, demolition is taking place and crews are removing the heating units that were formerly in place along the wall with the windows facing Harrison Road. Crews are also working on removing old drywall from one of the dining rooms. Throughout the construction process thus far, over 5000 pounds of carpeting have been recycled. ![]() |
| June 5 | ![]() On the first floor, in the front of the building, crews are working on installing heating and ventilation ducts. They are also are in the process of adding transitional walls that will divide the end of the transitional kitchen space from the construction area. On the second floor, abatement is ongoing in one of the dining rooms, and workers are continuing to gut the kitchen and the other dining room. |
| May 27 | ![]() Outside, workers are almost finished installing new water main pipes to meet East Lansing city water requirements. Inside on the main floor, workers are hanging drywall in the area that will become the transitional kitchen. Upstairs asbestos abatement continues in the one of the dining rooms and in another dining room, carpet has been ripped up, abatement has been completed and light fixtures are being removed to go to Salvage. In the upstairs kitchen, workers are removing the large metal hood for installation in the first floor temporary kitchen. All kitchen equipment has been evaluated and will either go in the first floor transitional kitchen, will be installed in other dining services across campus, or will go to Salvage. A portable restroom trailer will be placed outside on the north side of the Brody Building next week. The trailer is currently on site. ![]() |
| May 14 | ![]() Now that students have left for the summer, construction on the main Brody building has gone into full swing. On the first floor, crews are working on installing framing for the transitional kitchen and dining room. Upstairs, workers are preparing for asbestos abatement by installing showers and changing rooms and moving furniture and equipment from the existing kitchen and dining rooms to the open spaces downstairs. Outside, water pipes are being installed underground. ![]() |

| April 24 | ![]() Demolition is continuing throughout the first floor of Brody, preparing space for the transitional kitchen and dining room. Outside, crews are working on the storm sewer system and Grounds crews are removing shrubbery to be ground into mulch. ![]() |
| April 17 | Now that asbestos abatement has been completed on the first floor of the Brody Building, demolition has begun. Crews are in the process of tearing down walls to create open spaces and removing overhead ductwork. Outside, crews are preparing to begin utility work. Currently they are in the process of creating a manhole to allow underground access. Since the Brody building will be LEED certified, crews are taking special care with recycling, separating different types of materials into different recycling containers. |
| April 1 | ![]() Asbestos abatement on the first floor of Brody is nearing completion. Throughout the building, crews are making preparations for the major construction projects that will begin in the coming weeks. From a planning perspective, crews have been working on testing various floor covering materials for stain resistance and durability. |
| March 18 | ![]() Asbestos abatement continues at Brody. All other non-abatement areas on the first floor, which are still part of the renovation, have been stripped of flooring and ceiling coverings, leaving pipes and electrical outfitting exposed. |
| February 27 | Asbestos abatement continues at Brody. Crews have finished the north wing first floor and are currently working in the classrooms along the east side of the building. The ceilings have been removed at the loading dock and in the compactor room. Temporary walls have also been built to separate the work areas from the occupied areas. | |||
| February 20 | ![]() The transitional Brody Sparty’s is set up in the area that used to be the old Puffin’s Pastry Shop and is open for business from 3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. daily.
