Photo Akers Golf CoursesMichigan State University’s Forest Akers Golf Courses offer two 18-hole championship layouts, a state-of-the-art practice facility referred to as the Golf Center, two full-service golf shops, and a full complement of services. The golf courses are a site for research and instruction for both the general public and the MSU community.

The West Course was built in 1958 by W. Bruce Matthews and was renovated in 1992 by alumnus and world-renowned golf course architect, Arthur Hills. The Zagat Survey named the West Course as one of the top 10 Best Values in America for 2006/07. Golf Digest has given the West Course a four-star rating for the last several years.

The East Course was redesigned in 1997. Numerous trees and bunkers were added. The East Course is a fun eighteen holes that golfers of all levels can enjoy playing. The most extensive improvement to the East Course was the addition of the Golf Center.

The new heated covered stalls opened in January 2009 with 20 stalls open to the public.

The new heated, covered driving range, featuring 18-hitting stalls, is complete and open for business! Each stall now has dividers, hitting turf and baskets for balls, and are ready for use. Members of the MSU Women’s Golf Team are already hard at work practicing their swings in the new facility, and machines are being used to pack down the course snow and pick up all practice golf balls.

The new hitting stalls are nearing completion, and the temporary construction fencing has been removed. Workers have installed flood lights atop the stalls and are in the process of installing brushed-glass looking partitions with a green metal border between each stall. The same partition material now forms a back wall to the facility.

Workers are braving the wind and mud, and are pressing on with construction of the new heated, covered hitting stalls. With a corner “peak” already built on the south end of the facility, workers have laid a metal framework for a corner peak on the north side. A beige, corrugated metal door has been installed on one of the hitting stalls, and workers continue to finish the roof and interior of the individual stalls.

Workers have installed a green roof on more than half of the hitting stall structure. Workers continue to finish block walls between stalls and the framework for the heating system is currently visible from the outside.

December 10 Golf Construction.

Workers have installed more metal framework bars on the roof of the heated, covered hitting stalls and have put in wood pieces along the front. Plastic tarp covers the ends of the stall complex to keep out the snow while crews lay concrete blocks for the outer walls.
