Mayo HallMayo Hall, in West Circle Complex, built in 1931, is the oldest Residence Hall on campus. Mayo Hall was closed from May 2008 to August 2009 for an upgrade of all major mechanical, electrical and ventilation systems, elevator installation, asbestos abatement. The hall also had lighting upgrades, flooring and ceiling replacements, roofing and exterior repair, office modifications, reconfiguration of the community bathrooms, replacement of existing plumbing and furnishings and other related improvements. An upgrade was also made to all of Mayo’s life safety systems, including sprinklers, smoke detectors and fire alarm systems.

 


  August 4 Mayo Renovation

A few final touches wrap up construction on Mayo Hall. The carpet has been laid and the new furniture has been arranged in both first floor lounge areas. Curtains have been hung in all student rooms, and each room has been dusted, cleaned and evaluated for missing furniture. Outside, the landscape is flourishing. After over a year of construction, Mayo Hall finally is ready for student habitation.

  July 22 Mayo Renovation

More furniture has been added throughout Mayo Hall, both in the student rooms and in the common areas on the first floor. There are now a variety of regular and high top tables throughout the center section of the hall that students can use for studying. The hallways on the second and third floors are now fully carpeted, while crews are still working on carpeting the first floor. Emergency green light phones have been installed in the hallways on the third floor. Outside, the grass that was planted last week has begun to grow, and with all the rain we’ve been having lately, it looks like it might be looking pretty good by the time students move in!
 


  July 17

Mayo Renovation

Work at Mayo is nearing completion. The fences surrounding the building have been removed, and hard hats are no longer required inside. The complex manager’s and facilities offices are complete, and staff have moved back from Campbell to Mayo. On the third floor the carpet has been installed, mattresses and desk chairs have been delivered to students rooms and the bed guards have been added.

Carpet installation and furniture delivery continue on the first and second floors. Throughout the hall, washers and dryers have been installed in laundry rooms on every floor and more signage has been added. Outside, grass has been planted.

  July 10 Mayo Renovation

On the third floor, crews are preparing to install carpet in the hallways. Throughout the hall, workers are finishing installing locks on the student room doors. The bathrooms now appear to be finished, complete with stalls, toilets, showers, sinks and lockers. On the first floor, the lounges off the east and west lobbies have been cleared on construction equipment and workers are restoring them to move-in condition. Outside, landscaping has been added around the sides of the building, including a variety of shrubs and small trees.

  July 2 Mayo Renovation

In front of Mayo, all construction equipment has been removed and the dirt that was torn up throughout the construction process has been smoothed over. In the center portion of the first floor, decorative tiles with images such as squirrels and leaves have been installed in the floor. Ceiling-hanging light fixtures have been installed in the center section as well. Also on the first floor, the lounges that have housed much of the construction equipment used inside the building over the past year have been painted a pale sage green. The underside and insteps of the stairs have also been painted a pale sage green. Most of the student rooms on the third floor now contain modular furniture, and workers are in the process of adding furniture to rooms on the second floor. Behind Mayo, new concrete has been poured in the small parking lot facing Michigan Avenue.

  June 19 Mayo Renovation

Workers are currently laying tile throughout the center section of the first floor, where they are also installing lights on the walls, hanging doors for the offices and installing ceiling tiles. On the second and third floor, signs for room numbers and for the laundry rooms have been installed. Throughout the building, crews are installing screens on the windows in student rooms and testing the fire alarm system. Mechanics are on site working on the elevator, which now seems to move between floors. Outside, handrails have been installed along the stairs leading up to the entrances of the building.
 


  June 12 Mayo Renovation

The majority of the work in Mayo is now being done on the first floor, as the second and third floors are almost complete. Crews are working on painting the walls, installing ceilings in both student room wings and the center office section and finishing tiling in the first floor bathrooms. The wooden counters that were installed last week are being stained a dark color this week to match the woodwork in the rest of the building. Outside, light posts have been reinstalled along the paths on the sides of the building.

  June 5 Mayo Renovation

Work on the third floor looks to be nearing completion. Crews are currently working on polishing the wooden doors to student rooms, removing the dust and dirt that built up during the construction process. On the second floor, workers are finishing tiling the bathrooms and installing ceiling lighting. Fire doors have been added throughout the hallways on both the second and third floor. On the first floor, the office areas are really beginning to take shape as crews install wooden counters throughout the center area. Much painting and plastering is also happening throughout the first floor. Stairwells throughout the building have been painted a pale yellow color and the elevator shaft now has doors on all floors.

  May 27 Mayo Renovation

Outside, concrete paths continue to be laid and workers are installing bricks around the back fountain. Out front, an installation truck is pumping foam installation through a long tube that is run to the third floor through an outside window. Around the side of Mayo, facing Wills House, workers have also installed bike racks. Inside, more painting is being done, along with workers laying plaster on the walls. Drywall around the newly installed elevator appears to be complete

  May 14 Mayo Construction

Throughout the building, crews are working on installing wooden floors in student rooms. The paint crews have moved down to the second floor and are working on painting the hallways yellow, red, brown and green. The workers have also begun to install drywall around the previously exposed elevator shaft. Outside, concrete paths have been laid on the side and front of the building.

  April 24 Mayo Renovations

On the first floor, crews are working on waterproofing the bathrooms and are continuing to make progress in the center office areas. Crews have also been working on installing motion detector lights in the student rooms, which will make the hall more energy efficient. Outside, crews have broken ground to work on installing a system to handle snow melt.

Hallway ceiling installation has been completed in one of the wings of the third floor, and is continuing throughout the rest of the second and third floors. On the third floor, toilets and sinks are being installed in some of the bathrooms, and on the second floor crews have begun to tile the bathroom floors. On the second floor, crews have moved from priming to painting in the hallways, adding yellow and brown paint to match the third floor. Insulation has been installed in the office area walls on the first floor, and ceilings have been completed in some parts of the first floor as well.

Mayo RenovationParts of the hallway ceilings are beginning to be installed on the second and third floor, and overhead hallway lighting has been installed and is operational on the third floor. Drinking fountains have also been installed on the third floor. On the second floor, crews have begun to add the decorative tile borders to the bathroom/shower rooms and have begun to prime the hallways. The offices on the first floor are beginning to take shape, with walls being erected to break up the space into smaller rooms.

More character is being added to the third floor, as workers paint the hallway walls green, brown, red, and yellow and lay wood flooring in the student rooms. On the second floor, workers are continuing to make progress in the bathrooms/shower rooms, as they put down tile and continue waterproofing the walls.

Crews are have completed the installation of floor tiles in some of the third floor bathroom/shower rooms and are continuing to make progress in the other bathroom/shower rooms on the floor. In the second floor bathrooms, workers have begun waterproofing the walls, temporarily turning them bright blue. Electrical work is being done on all floors, and drywall installation is progressing on the main floor.

Crews are working their way through the second floor bathrooms/shower rooms and have completed installation of an olive green, decorative tile borders along the interior bathroom/shower room walls of the third floor. Workers are installing wood flooring in third-floor student rooms and are painting student room ceilings on the second floor with white paint. On the main floor, gray drywall has been installed around the prevalent metal framework.

Crews are working their way through the third floor bathrooms/shower rooms and have begun installing an olive green, decorative tile borders along the interior bathroom/shower room walls.

  February 20 Mayo Renovation

Crews are almost done with waterproofing and installing ceramic tile on the walls of the third floor’s four restrooms/shower rooms. Workers have installed new light fixtures, flooring and window edging to some student rooms on the third floor.
 


  February 6 Mayo Construction

Crews are in the process of applying white ceramic tiles to the third floor restrooms/shower rooms. Workers have poured one half inch of cement to level the floor and create the water drains. They have waterproofed all walls (making them bright blue) and are administering adhesive, then the tiles (which will need to set for 24 hours) before filling the space in between each tile with caulk. Crews will install the ceramic to the second floor restrooms/shower rooms next.

Cement-work continues on the second and third floor student room wings. A rectangular pipe covering has been built to hide some of the utility pipes and cords along the student room corridors. Large metal pipes and vents have been erected on the first floor and a variety of construction materials, including insulation, pipes of all sizes, wood and buckets of polyurethane are piled throughout the building.

Cement-work is being done on the second and third floor student room wings. A white, metal edging has been stapled around the corners of the hallway archways. Workers continue to build block walls around the elevator shaft.

  January 9 Mayo Construction.

There appears to be more metal framework in the first-floor lobby area. Workers continue to install fiber-glass installation, HVAC pipes and vents, and electrical outfitting. The elevator shaft as seen from the first-floor lobby is walled up half-way with cement blocks and the inside back wall of the building has been stripped. In the upper floor student room wings, more dark gray walls, entrance ways and door frames have been constructed.

  December 18 Mayo Construction.

Several boxes of fiberglass and pipe insulation are stacked throughout the main floor spaces. Block walls now line the space that will become the new elevator shaft. On the second and third floors, metal door archways have been built at the ends of the student room hallways.

  December 10 Mayo Hall Construction.

One of the main floor lobby areas has been set up for workers to cut pieces of wood for construction work throughout the Hall. Also on the main floor, ceiling ducts and pipes have been insulated and covered with a metallic foil and crews have poured cement into the foundation for the new elevator. On the second and third floor, the corridors containing student rooms have had dark gray drywall installed and a framework for ceiling lighting.

Mayo Construction.

With piles of snow outside, the heat is on inside of Mayo where workers continue to lay the foundation of the elevator space, and install several new metal wall frames throughout the building. Furnace-type equipment has also been moved into one of the basement rooms.

Workers are digging with jackhammers into the concrete foundation of the space that will be the new Mayo elevator. Workers are also hand-laying structural concrete in various empty doorframes to make way for the metal frames and new doors.

Crews continue to press on with renovations inside and out of Mayo. A variety of supplies and construction materials can be seen throughout the hall, and crews continue to lay metal framework for new walls. The remaining concrete has also been laid to create the driveway, parking area of Mayo facing Michigan Avenue.

Visible progress has been made both inside and out in the past two weeks. Both the outdoor entrance facing Michigan Ave. and on the west side of the building have new concrete sidewalks and entranceways. Inside are several supplies, including installation, copper pipes, heating and ventilation shoots and windows. The most notable change is the large, gaping space where the original furnace once stood. The space, which runs from the basement to the third floor, will be filled with a new elevator for the hall.

More digging is in process along the exterior grounds of Mayo. Inside, crews continue to work on fitting utility pipes and air shafts in the main floor common area. Cinder block walls and utility work also keep cropping up on the halls various floors.

It’s noisy inside Mayo with the sounds of heavy machinery and construction! Crews are hard at work on the main floor common areas of the hall, cutting and fitting utility pipes, completing installation of new windows and drilling a large hole in the ceiling.

The trench that was lining the west exterior of Mayo just last week, is now filled in and smoothed over. Crews continue to install windows and build new cinder block walls throughout the hall.

Crews inside have installed several large, U-shaped metal pipes in the main floor common area. The main floor shower room now has a large metal pipe installed to vent heat and moisture. As was last week and the week prior, windows continue to be installed throughout the building and crews are working on the outdoor utility project around the perimeter of Mayo.

Work continues in all areas of Mayo’s interior, including the first floor common area and all bathrooms/shower rooms. New windows continue to be installed throughout the Hall and crews have started building new cinder block walls, specifically on the third floor bathroom/shower room areas. On the main floor, metal support bars are positioned in cinder blocks, and appear to be supporting the wall between the hallway and the community bathroom.

The outdoor West Circle utility project is complete in time for those students moving into to the residence halls surrounding Mayo. Crews for the indoor Mayo renovations are currently installing new windows with modern fixtures around the outside of the Hall. Like the previous windows, the new windows are paned and have a bluish-green color to match the historic exterior of the building. Stacks of cinder blocks can be found in and outdoors, and crews appear to be using them to form walls in the bathroom/shower room areas of the Hall.

Work crews are working their way around the exterior of Mayo, removing old panel windows and placing temporary covers over the window spaces. Digging and ground work continues in the courtyard area facing Michigan Avenue, which now has several large piles of dirt. Inside, workers are beginning to install metal wall frames in the areas that were the student community bathrooms and shower rooms.

Mayo Hall

All windows on the exterior of the building, facing Michigan Avenue have been removed and replaced with a temporary covering until new windows are installed. The concrete in the courtyard area facing Michigan Avenue has been removed and workers are leveling the ground and piles of dirt and pea gravel are all around. Inside, the floor, ceiling and walls have been stripped bare throughout the main floor common areas. Outdoor utility work continues in the West Circle parking lot area.

Mayo’s basement has a near-completed cement floor and work continues on the main floor and in the front lobby. On the exterior of the building, crews are working to replace the empty window frames with new windows with modern locks and closures.

Mayo HallDemolition is progressing on the interior of Mayo, including work in the basement, main floor and second and third stories. Walls and doorways continue to be removed, most notably in the community shower rooms and restrooms. On the exterior of the building, various windows have been removed on the Michigan Avenue side of the hall and boarded up with either plastic or wood. Crews outside continue to dig and install underground utility piping before students arrive this fall.

An increasing number of community bathrooms and shower rooms on all floors are being gutted. For example, all that is left of what was the second floor bathroom is the Spartan wall trim; everything else has been removed and there are large holes in the floor for workers to utilize for debris removal and continued construction. Debris from Mayo’s demolition is being removed from the third floor center window facing Michigan Avenue. The floor in Mayo’s basement has been removed, revealing the earth below.

Heavy demolition continues in the various basement rooms and areas and the incinerator continues to be disassembled. Community bathroom shower and toilet stalls are indistinguishable and ceiling tiles and fixtures have been removed. Light fixtures and smoke detectors continue to be removed and several walls and doorframes have been demolished on the second floor student wing, among others.

Flooring has been torn up in Mayo’s student rooms. Select doors have been removed and crews have marked several walls and door frames for demolition. Some bathrooms and shower rooms have been stripped and some still house marble and plaster rubble. The light fixtures have been torn out as well as outlets and electrical systems. Work also aggressively continues on the outdoor utility project. Many materials have been recycled and reused during the demolition, including concrete, masonry, marble, steel, wood among others.

Mayo HallWork crews inside are demolishing all community bathrooms and shower rooms, removing marble services and taking out plaster. Workers continue to take apart the original brick incinerator, running from the basement to the roof, to make way for the new elevator. Crews are also pulling out all light sockets and electrical outlets and taking out select main hallway and stairwell doors.

Both the massive outdoor Physical Plant-funded utility project and numerous indoor renovations are in full swing at Mayo. Outside, crews working on “The Big Dig” have installed sheet metal shoring to hold back the earth and prevent it from caving in on workers as they lay new utility groundwork. Mayo’s outdoor utility project will be completed before the close of summer and work crews are working sun-up to sun-down, six days a week.

Inside, contractors are working on everything from asbestos abatement, to demolition of all community bathrooms (including shower rooms and restrooms) and the original brick incinerator. A new elevator will be installed where the incinerator once stood.
