Akers Hosts the Big Ten. A Big Tournament, Big Time!
Forest Akers Hosts Men’s Big Ten Golf Championship

Big Ten TourneyThe 2008 Men’s Big Ten Golf Championship gave Forest Akers the opportunity to show their true colors by representing the Division and the University in an outstanding way. From April 24 through April 27, Forest Akers West was host to the Men’s Big Ten Golf Championship and the MSU Men’s Golf Team, who won a back-to-back championship.

“While we host a men’s and women’s golf event annually, the opportunity to host the Big Ten Golf Championship is special because it only comes every 10 to 11 years,” said Ken Horvath, general manager of Forest Akers. “I’m proud to say that not only did our Men’s Spartan golfers defend their championship, but Forest Akers won as well. Our staff, facilities and Divisional partners embodied the prestige and sheer magnitude of the Big Ten.”

Ken and his team started their detailed planning for the Championship weeks prior to the event and got the whole campus community involved. Grounds crews made sure that the courses were in picture-perfect shape, retail staff stocked Pro Shops with the highest quality Spartan gear, catering crews provided guests with great food during the event, and Athletic Catering even hosted a special dinner at the Stadium the night before the event.

In addition to the weeks of preparation, nearly 50 volunteers from the Division, the University and beyond came out to ensure that everything ran seamlessly.

Dick Sigelko, former manager of the Division of Housing & Food Services Information Services helped to schedule volunteers to work the event as scorers and fore-caddies.

“The whole event was great; the players and their families were as nice as can be to the event volunteers,” said Dick.

The Forest Akers team could not have been happier with the results of the nail-biter of a championship — the final results came down to the last player on the last hole of the last day!

“We really do feel like we’re a partner to MSU Athletics and the Spartan golf teams,” said Ken. Ultimately, their successes breed our own successes and vice versa.”

The Championship not only allowed Forest Akers to show off their own facility and staff, but also introduced hundreds of guest representatives from Big Ten schools nationwide to MSU’s campus.

“This year, we hosted guests who attended the event and also a television audience,” said Ken. This was the first Big Ten Championship televised on the Big Ten Network. It really added so much to the experience and took our visibility to a whole new level.”

The Championship aired on May 14 and for those who missed the excitement, Forest Akers is featuring the tape in their Pro Shops.

Congratulations to Ken and his team, the event ran like clockwork and an Outstanding Spartan Experience was had by all throughout the Big Ten!

The Forest Akers West course is celebrating its 50th year in operation. Stop by all season long for special events and giveaways in honor of this momentous event.
